The piece displays craft, eloquent use of materials to achieve effect. The range of color in the mountains, the torn edges, the bleeding ink are all examples of this. Likewise the background made of text and color wash as texture for sky and the words float as cloud-like, although there are clouds again as well. The balance is pleasing. The additional texture spatters add shimmer.
Personally, i'm having a problem with words in pictures, i find them distracting, i tend to read the words and miss the forest for the trees. (Ironic as i use words now.)
In this case, the "verse" and picture was created for someone and i expect it will speak to them, the tone is somewhat personal which is enjoyable.
Overall i find the piece decorative and generally pleasant. Conservative. As such, the piece does not reach out and speak to me, or grab me, or really create much impetus to engage it. It's nice. I reckon i'm interested feelings like awe, humor, disgust, erotic enticement, subtle emotional content, even smells or sounds. This has little of that for me, at best i would say it conveys a bit of autumn.
That said, i still prefer it to mass marketed posters of pianos with roses, or prints of "great masters" or ikea paintings. However i think, were it to be presented lithographically, it would start to look like that sort of art. Obviously this sort of thing has a large following, so in that sense, the piece is very successful. Just not my bag.
